Description

An easy way to grow microgreens indoors year-round, these fibrous mats let even beginner gardeners produce a successful crop without a lot of mess & effort. Simply place the mat in any suitably sized grow tray that has a raised pattern in the bottom for air circulation. Sprinkle seeds of your choice, then keep them moist to support germination and sustain them until they’re ready to harvest. If you sell live microgreens, these are the perfect media!

How it Works

Terrafibre™ Grow Mats are made from 100% natural industrial hemp fibres that are separated, cleaned, and needle-punched into a lightweight, biodegradable growing medium. Designed for microgreens, sprouts, wheatgrass, and other short-rotation crops, these mats deliver excellent water retention and a clean, soilless environment that supports strong germination and healthy root development.

Instructions

1. Pre-soak seeds if desired seed directions recommend it. Typically 6-8 hours.

2. Place Terrafibre Grow Mat in a grow tray fibre side up & sprinkle with recommended seed rate evenly over mat. Wet with Ph neutral water until mat is saturated, but not covered by water.

3. Stack trays or put in humidity dome to encourage high germination and strong rooting. Keep in darkness for first 1-4 days depending on the seed.

4. Place grow mat under a hydroponic grow light or in direct sunlight for approximately 8-10 hours per day.

5. Keep the grow mat saturated by spraying once or twice a day.

6. When ready, harvest crop with scissors & enjoy your delicious greens! Keep greens in the mat until ready to eat for longer storage.

I really like this product for growing microgreens. It works very well for smaller seeds (which is most of them) and moderately well for larger seeds (peas, fava.) It is very easy to use. I put it in my growing tray and wet it down, sprinkle seeds on top, mist the seeds, cover and let germinate. Works very well for indoors. If you are using them outdoors in the summer, you'll have to keep a good eye on them because they can dry out quickly. One of the major benefits of this product is that you can grow microgreens without the messiness of soil, which gives you a cleaner product.

What are the grow mats made of?

The Terrafibre Grow Mats are made from Canadian Grown Hemp Fibre. The Hemp Fibre is sourced from local farmers across Canada, mainly Alberta and Manitoba. The Hemp Fibre is separated, cleaned and processed into our 100% biodegradable soilless growing medium. The white backing on the grow mats is made from biodegradable cellulose.

How much water and light do the mats need?

It depends on your growing environment. Every greenhouse and growing room has different levels of humidity, so it can affect your mats moisture levels. We recommend to spritz 1-2 times daily depending on the mats needs. For the first 3 days, we recommend to stack the trays and deprive the seeds from light. After 3 days, provide with approximately 8-10 hours light, with plenty of water will encourage strong germination and growth.

Where can I purchase the Grow Mats and what countries are they available in?

Can these mats be easily cut and sliced into different sized trays?

The Terrafibre Hemp Grow Mats can easily be sliced or cut to fit into various sized trays. We use a mechanized fabric cutter that has a sharpening wheel that has worked amazing.

Are the Grow Mats single use, or can they be used multiple times?

They are designed for one times use, that’s why we made them fully biodegradable and compostable. If you want to try re-using them, dry the mats out, pull off the roots and sterilize the mats with a food grade hydrogen peroxide. It’s a lot of work, but if it works for you, great!

Do the mats completely replace soil and all you need is water? Or do they need nutrients or minerals?

Just plain old tap water will do the trick (assuming the ph isn’t wild) All your mats need is to be watered 1-2 times a day depending, along with approximately 8 hours of light/sunlight a day. Seeds have enough nutrients to get them to the full lifecycle of microgreens.

Do I need to soak my seeds before using the mat?

We recommend soaking seeds for approximately 6-8 hours before sprinkling across the hemp grow mats. Look on the seed bags instruction, or a quick google search for specific amounts of time.

Can all seeds be grown on the mats?

All microgreens seeds can be grown on our mat. If you are switching from anoter media, do some trials for what works best for you. Growers in California have different growing techniques compared to up here in Canada. If you try using other seeds, like flowers, it will work for germination, but as soon as it’s past its true leaf stage, it will need to start getting nutrients and likely transplanted to a larger container.

What sizes are available in the Hemp Grow Mat?

Do you have to do anything else to the mat before use? Or can you just slip them straight out of the packet into a grow tray?

Step 1: Open the packet. Step 2: Pull out a grow mat and place it into a grow tray. It really is as simple as that! Be sure to give the mat a healthy watering the first time, to ensure the hemp is completely saturated with no standing water visible over the hemp.

How thick are the mats?

Our standard mats are 300gsm. If you are interested in thicker mats, such as 500gsm or 750gsm, please contact us and we will be able to get some mats custom-made.
