BioComposites Group develops and integrates renewable, bio-based materials by engineering hemp-based automotive composites as the foundation of lighter, more sustainable vehicle components. We are leading the shift away from oil-based plastics toward high-performance natural fiber interior structures.

Description

Potential hemp automotive component applications include door panels, rear package trays, load floors, instrument panels, center consoles, pillars, seat backs, spare tire covers, and door bolsters. The composition of our hemp mats can be customized for specific applications, thanks to our unique ability to blend different fibres.

BioComposites Group is strategically located to leverage strong relationships with supply partners in both the wood fibre and agricultural fibre sectors. Where required, our non-woven composite mats can also be formulated with a blend of natural and synthetic fibres to meet the performance needs of particular applications.

Three Composite Technologies

We offer multiple composite solutions to meet different OEM requirements, from traditional thermoset to advanced thermoplastic technologies.

Wood Fibre Composite (Thermoset)

Traditional hot-compression molding

BCG utilizes wood fibres to produce a composite sheet that can be used in the traditional hot-compression molding process. BCG combines wood fibres with an oil-based binder (PF resin) to create a lightweight rigid part.

COMPONENTS

  • Thermo-mechanically refined (TMP) wood fibres
  • Long fibre component, synthetic and/or natural fibres
  • Nylon scrim backing sheet
  • Emulsified wax solution
  • PF or similar resin

APPLICATIONS

Load floors, package trays, interior door panels, seat backs, spare tire covers, consoles, headliners

Natural Fibre PP Composite (NFPP)

Thermoplastic – 25% weight reduction

Agricultural hemp or flax fibres combined with polypropylene fibres produce a Terrafibre panel product that yields a 25% weight reduction over glass-reinforced plastics.

  • De-cortified and cleaned natural fibres (hemp/flax)
  • Polypropylene synthetic fibres
  • Polypropylene scrim backing sheet

APPLICATIONS

Instrument panels, door panels, center consoles

Light-Weight Reinforced Thermoplastic (LWRT)

Low pressure, thermo-formable composite

A low pressure, thermo-formable composite of plastic resin and long chopped fiberglass combined with outer layers as needed for the application. BCG can blend agricultural fibres into this product as well.

  • De-cortified and cleaned natural fibres (hemp/flax)
  • Polypropylene synthetic fibres
