"Inspired, fueled and renewed by nature, we build, grow, and prosper"

Driven by Purpose

Biocomposites Group (BCG) is a leader in hemp-based non-woven materials, providing high-performance, sustainable solutions for industries including erosion control, horticulture, pet products, food insulation, and construction.

Based in the Canadian prairies, we source our raw materials from local agriculture and forestry operations—materials that were once considered waste. Through science-driven innovation and engineering expertise, we unlock the natural performance of industrial hemp to create an expanding portfolio of products designed to solve real-world challenges across global industries.

Our Story

Founded in 2010 by Dan Madlung and Brenda Madlung, BioComposites Group was built on a simple belief: replacing synthetic products with locally grown, natural materials can create a better world.

From the beginning, we set out to manufacture hemp-based products at commercial scale. We were—and still are—pioneers. Many of the products we design, manufacture, and sell had never been made before. Working alongside our suppliers, employees, and customers, we create innovative solutions that are more sustainable and consistently outperform synthetic alternatives.

What started as a materials journey became a hemp-fibre movement—one that supports farmers, strengthens rural communities, creates meaningful jobs, and benefits the planet.

“We are so proud of all those who work in and support the hemp industry. We will continue to do our part to ensure that hemp benefits all those involved.”

-Dan & Brenda Madlung, Co-Founders of Biocomposites Group

Our Mission

At BioComposites Group, our mission is to replace synthetic, plastic-based materials with high-performance solutions made from natural fibres—proving that sustainability and performance belong together.

We believe that protecting infrastructure and protecting the environment aren’t competing goals—they’re the same goal. Our hemp-based products deliver superior performance while supporting regenerative agriculture and eliminating plastic waste.

“Everything we make starts with the genius of nature.”

Preformance First

We design products that exploit the mechanical qualities of plants—strength, lightness, flexibility—to solve critical industrial problems.

100% Biodegradable

All our products are fully compostable, utilizing plant byproducts previously considered waste to create sustainable solutions

Canadian Made

All our products use Canadian-grown fibres, decorticated and manufactured right here in Drayton Valley, Alberta.

TAILORED TO YOUR NEEDS

Custom Solutions

Our unique capability to blend fibers and mold complex shapes means we can create exactly what your project demands. BCG has developed multiple natural fibre solutions to a wide range of applications. By having the ability to blend different types of fibre together, the composition of our mats can be customized given the particular application. We strive to become the leader in natural fibre non-wovens.

R&D Collaboration

Work directly with our R&D team to develop new products or adapt existing solutions to your unique requirements.

Custom Dimensions

From Terrafibre™ grow mats to erosion blankets, we manufacture products in custom sizes to match your project specifications.

Frequently Asked Questions

Learn more about our natural fiber products and how they can work for your project.

What Industries do you serve?

We serve four core industries: Automotive (interior composites for OEMs), Construction (hemp insulation and hempcrete), Agriculture (Terrafibre™ growing products), and Erosion Control (biodegradable erosion blankets). Our products are designed for commercial-scale applications across North America.

Yes, 100%. All our products are made from natural hemp fibers that fully biodegrade, leaving no microplastics or harmful residues.

Our erosion control blankets, for example, break down naturally over 24-36+ months while establishing permanent vegetation.

All our products are manufactured in Drayton Valley, Alberta, Canada. We use Canadian-grown hemp, supporting local agriculture and ensuring short, reliable supply chains for our North American customers. Our products are designed for commercial-scale applications across North America.

Absolutely. We specialize in custom fiber blending, compression molding for 3D shapes, and products in custom dimensions. Our in-house R&D team works directly with clients to develop bespoke solutions—from automotive door panels to specialized grow mats.

Hemp composites are approximately 30% lighter than conventional plastics while offering comparable or superior strength-to-weight ratios. They’re carbon-negative (hemp absorbs CO2 while growing), fully biodegradable, and can be produced using existing manufacturing processes.

Through our flagship brand Terrafibre, we offer growing media, erosion control products, pet mats, biobased panels, and custom sustainable composites—engineered for durability, water retention, natural strength, and compostability. Our materials deliver superior performance while helping partners reduce waste, lower carbon footprints, and meet ESG objectives.

Pricing varies by product line, volume, and customization requirements. We offer competitive pricing for both standard catalog items and custom solutions. Contact our sales team for a detailed quote tailored to your specific needs and order volume

Minimum order quantities vary by product. Many Terrafibre™ products are available in smaller quantities for trial purposes. For automotive composites and large-scale erosion control projects, we work with you to establish quantities that make sense for your application and budget.
