Engineered Natural
Erosion Control
What Is Hemp Erosion Control?
Hemp erosion control blankets are engineered natural-fibre systems designed to provide immediate soil stabilization while supporting long-term vegetation establishment. Terrafibre Erosion Control Blankets are made with Canadian-grown industrial hemp fibres, needle-punched into a non-woven mat with consistent thickness and density for predictable field performance.
We offer two mechanically needle-punched backings: a cellulose-based scrim and a double-sided jute netting—both forming a fully biodegradable system. This construction provides the structural integrity needed during critical early site stabilization and naturally breaks down as vegetation establishes, without introducing plastic residues into the environment. The double-sided jute backing also offers enhanced structure and slope-hold for steeper or high-flow areas.
Manufactured in Canada, Terrafibre hemp erosion control blankets deliver reliable, repeatable performance for infrastructure, reclamation, and environmentally sensitive projects—where engineering standards and ecological outcomes matter.

Non-trapping design available, eliminating wildlife entanglement risk, preventing microplastic contamination, and ensuring safer maintenance and mowing operations.
Performance = Risk Reduction
Every specification is engineered to minimize project risk and ensure compliance.
Inspection Compliance
Blankets maintain integrity through multiple inspection cycles, eliminating rework triggers.
Predictable Degradation
24–36 month lifespan aligns with vegetation establishment timelines—no premature failure.
Slope Stability Under Stress
High tensile strength maintains coverage during heavy rainfall and runoff events
No Wildlife Incidents
Net-free options eliminates entanglement risk and associated project delays.
Maintenance Safe
No plastic netting means mowers and maintenance equipment operate without obstruction.
Regulatory Alignment
Meets or exceeds specifications for sensitive environments and protected areas.
The Science of Hemp Fiber
Hemp’s natural fibre composition—shaped by evolution— delivers durability and structural integrity that engineered systems often struggle to match.”
Superior Tensile Strength
Hemp fibers have tensile strength up to 3x greater than straw, with natural resistance to tearing and fragmentation.
Optimized Longevity
Hemp provides effective soil stabilization for 24–36 months—the “Goldilocks zone”—long enough to protect vegetation during critical establishment periods, yet short enough to biodegrade naturally
High Lignin Content
The natural lignin in hemp fibres resists UV degradation and helps maintain structural integrity through changing weather conditions.

COMMON QUESTIONS
Frequently Asked Questions
Non-woven mats are at the core of what we do. By engineering natural fibres into consistent, high-performance materials, we’re able to deliver products that perform predictably in the field while remaining fully biodegradable.
What does BioComposites Group mean by “non-woven mats”?
Non-woven mats are engineered fiber materials made by mechanically bonding or entangling fibers together into a consistent sheet without weaving or knitting. At BioComposites Group, we use industrial hemp and other natural fibers that are processed — often by needle-punching — to create a strong, uniform mat structure tailored to different applications.
How are your non-woven mats different from traditional woven or synthetic mats?
Unlike woven materials, non-woven mats don’t require yarns or weaving processes. This allows us to directly use raw fibers and blend them for specific performance characteristics. And because our mats are made from natural fibers like hemp instead of plastic or synthetic materials, they are fully biodegradable and reduce environmental impact.
What benefits do non-woven hemp mats offer?
Eco-friendly & biodegradable: Our mats naturally break down over time, eliminating plastic residues in soil and ecosystems.
Customization: We can tailor fiber blends and thickness to specific uses — from erosion control blankets to grow mats and automotive applications.
Performance: Hemp fibers provide excellent strength, moisture retention, and soil adhesion while still being lightweight.
Enhanced soil & vegetation outcomes: In applications like landscape and restoration, non-woven hemp mats help retain moisture, suppress weeds, and support plant establishment.
What industries benefit from BioComposites Group’s non-woven mats?
Our non-woven mats are widely used in construction, landscaping, and land-restoration applications, including erosion control, slope stabilization, site rehabilitation, and vegetation establishment. These industries benefit from mats that deliver reliable performance on site while meeting environmental and biodegradability requirements that synthetic materials can’t.
How do hemp composites compare to synthectic plastics?
Hemp composites are approximately 30% lighter than conventional plastics while offering comparable or superior strength-to-weight ratios. They’re carbon-negative (hemp absorbs CO2 while growing), fully biodegradable, and can be produced using existing manufacturing processes.
How does your pricing work?
Pricing varies by product line, volume, and customization requirements. We offer competitive pricing for both standard catalog items and custom solutions. Contact our sales team for a detailed quote tailored to your specific needs and order volume
Do you have minimum order quantities?
Minimum order quantities vary by product. Many Terrafibre™ products are available in smaller quantities for trial purposes. For automotive composites and large-scale erosion control projects, we work with you to establish quantities that make sense for your application and budget.
