There are many potential applications in the oil and gas industry for oil and/or chemicals absorption that a biocomposite product can address. ​As an oil absorbent product for the oil remediation and land reclamation industry, agricultural fibre mats exhibit a lot of potential. Hemp fibres have high absorbency properties, which has led to its occasional use for oil and waste spill cleanup.

Suppliers of bio-based industrial absorbents see value in expanding the use of land-based oil spill cleanup by using natural fibre absorbents for soil remediation. This is known as in situ oil spill control, where the natural absorbent removes the oil from the soil, and then accelerates the degradation to leave remediated soil.

Given the highly hygroscopic properties of natural fibres, we manufacture our absorbent mats by blending natural fibres into the product. These mats can be used around leaking equipment for instance and it is possible to extract the absorbed liquid and then re-use the mats. This green alternative greatly reduces the cost for disposal and keeps hazardous wastes out of lands fills.

​We are able to adjust the composition of our mat depending on the application; our non-woven composite mats can be made from a blend of natural fibres and synthetic fibres.
